Testing two barcoding markers in the Antarctic Lysianassoidea (Amphipoda: Crustacea)

Category:
Pilot project
Acronym:
Barcolys
Coordinator:
Patrick Martin & Charlotte Havermans (RBINS)
JEMU partner:
Zoltán T. Nagy, Gontran Sonet
Project summary:
Recently, the ANDEEP (Antarctic Deep Sea Biodiversity) campaigns have explored the Antarctic deep sea basins for the first time and a large number of amphipod crustacean samples were collected for morphology and DNA studies, complementing the existing collections at the RBINS of samples originating from the Antarctic continental shelf. For this short term project, we want to test the suitability of two mitochondrial genes (COI and 16S rRNA) as barcoding markers in Antarctic lysianassid amphipods.
Collaborations:
Claude De Broyer (RBINS)
Lab work progress:
Completed. 143 COI sequences and 45 fragments of 28S rRNA with an aligned length of over 1300bp were obtained.
Data analysis:
Completed. Bayesian, Maximum likelihood, parsimony. DNA barcoding for a quick survey of species diversity, detection of new species. Phylogeny with 28S rRNA sequences.
Starting date:
1st January 2008
Project status:
Completed
